Why churchyards? First, because lichens are slow growing, in some cases extremely slow growing – perhaps 1 mm per year – and so more than almost every other living thing in this book, they benefit from the lack of disturbance offered by a churchyard. The stones of the church itself and the boundary wall commonly remain untouched for centuries; trees in churchyards too may be seldom subject to routine pruning or replacement. Most importantly however, within that stable and protected environment, it is the gravestones and chest tombs with their horizontal moisture-retaining covers that above all offer the perfect platform for lichens to colonise. Lichens are the most important colonisers of virgin rock anywhere because they have the ability both to adhere to the surface and to obtain nutrient from the minerals within. Thus, they can grow without the need for soil and in the wider natural environment are hugely important in actually beginning soil formation from newly exposed rocks.
